Welcome to Room 31
Room 31 is a Chinese Immersion Program classroom (CIP). Our classroom is a split class which means that it contains both 2nd and 3rd grade students. Mrs. Wong's class has seven new second graders. The class spent the first week getting acquainted. Each student drew a self portrait and also decorated a key shape with their name, # in their family, summer vacation events, and favorite activities. Each student explained their "key" to the class. The projects are on the bulletin board in the classroom, come in and see them. The students have also been surveying each other on their favorite animal, food, sport, and charting the results.
As the new school year begins the second and third grade students are studying their school community. They are learning about the people and jobs that help their school function smoothly. The students worked in groups to create maps of the school. The students will also be studying the moon and its phases. A trip to the Morrison Planetarium is planned for October. The second graders will watch "Neighbors in Space" and the third graders will watch "New Worlds." Visit the Morrison Planetarium web site at www.calacademy.org/planetarium.
The students will also be learning about and celebrating the Moon Festival. They will each construct a lantern and parade through the yards along with the other CIP classes. After the parade the students will taste moon cakes, a traditional food for this festival. A note will be sent home to let you know when the parade will be so you can come and join in the fun. A short explanation of the Moon Festival and its traditions can be found at http://www.educ.uvic.ca/faculty/mroth/438/CHINA/moon.htm.
